More log work
Snow is almost gone but it has been very windy.
Worked on a 19' long log post and braces this weekend...
Here is Casey finishing up the top of the post
Here is a sequence showing the scribing process. The compass is used to trace the intersection of the log edge. The distance between the compass points is set to equal the maximum gap distance between the two parts.
Here, I used a chainsaw to initially cut a groove around the line. A hammer and chisel is more precise and prevents tearout better. I used a hammer and chisel on the next one.
No photos of the carving process but it involves about 10-15 minutes of carving with the chainsaw to remove interior of the cut. The area is dished out to create a thin edge all the way around.
After a trial fit, the log is re-scribed and adjusted as necessary. It takes 3-6 tries to get it all adjusted. The grinder tool is nice for the final shaping.
This one is getting scribed at both ends and each time the log is shortened a little, the position of the other end of the log moves slightly so it is a bit of a moving target.
Success!

Feb 7
Work continues on the house. Almost finished framing what I can before the log ridge and rafters go up.
Casey and I got started fitting the rafters to the ridge yesterday. It is much easier to do this on the ground than in the air.
The ridge log was marked with plumb lines at each end. Then, I marked the 8/12 pitch roof line on the log end. We rolled the log over until the 8/12 line was level and fixed the log to stay in that position. Next we position a rafter over the ridge and level it. Using a compass, we scribe lines on the rafter and then carve out the "cope" with a chainsaw. There is a stringline set where the tips of the rafter ends meet above the ridge
Later we will roll the ridge the other way to fit the back rafters.
I put two temporary rafters up on the house to make sure my measurements were all correct. The house is taking shape now. The building inspectors seem to approve..
